They tied Kabir up in chains and brought him there.

This hymn draws on a story from Kabir's life, when he was treated cruelly and, by tradition, was bound and brought to the river Ganges. Gang gusaa-in gahir gambheer: the mother-river, deep and grave. The scene is set for a moment of great fear, and great steadiness. The story ends in rescue.
