In plain words

My mind did not shake, so why should my body be afraid?

My heart stayed resting at the lotus feet of the One.

The waves of the Ganges broke my chains, and Kabir sat calmly on a deer skin, the seat of one who meditates.

When your heart stays steady, fear loses its grip on you.
The deeper layer

When your mind stays steady in the One, your body has nothing to fear.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man na digai tan kaahay ka-o daraa-ay — "if the mind is unshaken, why should the body fear?" The heart stays charan kamal, absorbed in the "lotus feet," the beauty of the One. Then tutee janjeer: the chains break, and Kabir is seated serene marigchhaalaa par, on a deer-skin — the image of a settled, meditative freedom. Fear met with steadiness; the story turns to release.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you find steadiness when things around you feel shaky?
