Beyond The Reach Of Any Map

ਖੰਡਲ ਮੰਡਲ ਮੰਡਲ ਮੰਡਾ ॥
khandal mandal mandal mandaa.
He creates planets, solar systems and galaxies;
ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੀਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਖੰਡਾ ॥
tari-a asthaan teen tari-a khanda.
He destroys the three worlds, the three gods and the three qualities.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਭ ਅੰਤ ॥
agam agochar rahi-aa abh ant.
The Inaccessible and Unfathomable Lord God dwells in the heart.
ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਧਰਨੀਧਰ ਮੰਤ ॥੩॥
paar na paavai ko DharneeDhar mant. ||3||
No one can find the limits or the secrets of the Lord of the World. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One makes worlds, solar systems and galaxies.

The One brings to an end the three worlds, the three great gods and the three qualities of nature.

The One, beyond reach and beyond knowing, lives in the heart.

No one can find the limits or the secrets of the Lord of the World.

The One is bigger than any map and closer than your own heartbeat.
The deeper layer

The One makes whole worlds, and still lives quietly in your heart.

khandal mandal means realms and systems, all the worlds and star systems. The One makes them and brings them to an end. The verse also names the three worlds, the three gods, and the three gunas, the three qualities that make up nature in Indian thought. All of them come and go within the One.

The One is agam agochar, beyond thought and beyond the senses. Yet the One is rahi-aa abh ant, living inside the heart. Think of the whole night sky, and then a firefly glowing in your cupped hands. The vast One out there and the near One in here are the same.

A Question to Sit With

How can something feel both endlessly big and very close at the same time?
