Beyond High And Low, One Music Sounds

abran baran si-o man hee pareet.
Those who believe in high and low social classes,
ha-umai gaavan gaavahi geet.
only sing songs and chants of egotism.
anhad sabad hot jhunkaar.
The Unstruck Sound-current of the Shabad, the Word of God, resounds in that place,
jih pa-orhHay parabh saree gopaal. ||2||
where the Supreme Lord God abides. ||2||

In plain words

Those whose minds love sorting people into high and low only sing songs of ego.

The unstruck music of the Word, a sound no instrument makes, rings out in the place where the great One lives.

Ranking people as high or low is only the ego singing; the deeper music treats everyone as one.
The deeper layer

Sorting people into higher and lower is only a song of ego.

abran baran means "no caste and caste." It is the whole idea of ranking people by the family they were born into. People stuck on that ranking, Kabir says, ha-umai gaavan gaavahi geet — they only sing songs of ego.

But where the One lives, another sound plays. It is the anhad sabad, the unstruck music that no instrument makes. Think of a playground where kids pick teams by who is popular. Now picture a game where everyone just plays. The second game is closer to where the One lives. Every soul is equal there.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone treated as "less"? What would treating everyone as equal look like?
