Verse 3 of 5

The One Thing Worth Doing

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਅਵਰੇਂ ਕਾਮ ॥
mithi-aa jihbaa avrayN kaam.
O my tongue, other occupations are false.
ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਪਦੁ ਇਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥
nirbaan pad ik har ko naam. ||2||
The state of Nirvaanaa comes only through the Lord's Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my tongue, every other task is false.

Deep, lasting peace comes only through the Naam of the One.

Deep peace grows from keeping the One in mind.
The deeper layer

Deep, lasting peace comes only through the Naam.

Nirbaan pad, the state of deep and unshakable peace (nirvana), comes through the Naam alone. "Other occupations are false" means they pass away; they wash off, while the Naam holds.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most calm and steady inside?
