While Naam Dayv was worshipping, he was grabbed and driven out. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Laughing and playing, I came to Your temple, O One I love.

While Namdev was worshipping, people grabbed him and drove him out.

No one gets to decide you do not belong with the One.
The deeper layer

A joyful heart came to worship and was pushed out of the temple.

Hasat khaylat tayray dayhuray aa-i-aa: laughing and playing, I came to Your temple. Bhagat karat naamaa pakar uthaa-i-aa: while Namdev was worshipping, he was grabbed and made to leave.

In the old story, the temple keepers turned him out because of the family he was born into, a family of cloth dyers that people then counted as low. It is one of the great dignity moments in Gurbani: every person stands equal before the One.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been left out unfairly? How did it feel?
