Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My family is counted low, O my King.

Why was I born into a family of cloth dyers?

The One never measures anyone as high or low.
The deeper layer

The hurt of being looked down on can be brought straight to the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Heenrhee jaat mayree jaadim raa-i-aa: my caste is counted low, O King. Jaadim Raa-i-aa, King of the Yadavs, is an old name for the One. Chheepay kay janam kaahay ka-o aa-i-aa: why was I born a chheepaa, into a family of cloth dyers?

The question is honest. It names the hurt the way a child names it at bedtime, to someone who listens. Every person has equal dignity before the One, and the rest of the story shows it.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone the world overlooks that you could treat with respect?
