Nectar Over Poison

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
har kee bhagat na daykhai jaa-ay.
He does not go to see where the Lord is being worshipped.
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
maarag chhod amaarag paa-ay.
He abandons the Lord's Path, and takes the wrong path.
ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
moolhu bhoolaa aavai jaa-ay.
He forgets the Primal Lord God, and is caught in the cycle of reincarnation.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਡਾਰਿ ਲਾਦਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
amrit daar laad bikh khaa-ay. ||2||
He throws away the Ambrosial Nectar, and gathers poison to eat. ||2||

In plain words

He never goes to see where the One is being worshipped.

He leaves the right path and takes the wrong one.

Forgetting the Source of everything, he keeps coming and going, born again and again.

He throws away the sweet nectar and loads himself up with poison to eat.

What nourishes you is always there to return to.
The deeper layer

Forget the Source, and you pour out the nectar and fill up on poison.

Har kee bhagat na daykhai jaa-ay: he does not go where the One is worshipped. Maarag chhod amaarag paa-ay: he leaves the path for no path. Moolhu bhoolaa aavai jaa-ay: forgetting the root, he keeps coming and going in the cycle of birth. Amrit daar laad bikh khaa-ay: he throws away the amrit and loads up poison to eat.

Think of tipping out a glass of fresh water to fill it with soda. It looks like a treat and leaves you thirstier.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good habit you can come back to when you have drifted?
