Verse 4 of 5

Beautiful On The Outside

ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੈ ਅਖਾਰਾ ॥
ji-o baisvaa kay parai akhaaraa.
He is like the prostitute, who comes to dance,
ਕਾਪਰੁ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
kaapar pahir karahi seeNgaaraa.
wearing beautiful clothes, decorated and adorned.
ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
pooray taal nihaalay saas.
She dances to the beat, exciting the breath of those who watch her.
ਵਾ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਫਾਸ ॥੩॥
vaa kay galay jam kaa hai faas. ||3||
But the noose of the Messenger of Death is around her neck. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He is like a woman hired to dance before a crowd,

who puts on fine clothes and decorates herself.

She dances perfectly to the beat and holds every watcher's breath,

but death's noose is around her neck.

A beautiful outside is not enough without something real inside.
The deeper layer

A dazzling show can hide that time is running out.

Ji-o baisvaa kay parai akhaaraa: like a woman hired to dance before a crowd. Kaapar pahir karahi seengaaraa: she puts on fine clothes and decorates herself. Pooray taal nihaalay saas: she keeps perfect time and holds every breath in the room. Vaa kay galay jam kaa hai faas: yet death's noose is around her neck.

The picture is of a life spent on show, the way the wrongdoer's life is spent, while time quietly runs out. Inner truth lasts longer than outer show.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell when something is real and not just for show?
