ਨਾਮਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੧੨॥
naamaa gaavai gun gopaal. ||12||
singing the Praises of the Lord. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With chains on his feet, Namdev keeps the beat with his hands,

singing the praises of Gopal, the Keeper of the World.

When one way is blocked, joy finds another.
The deeper layer

Joy that is chained in one place finds another way out.

Paavhu bayrhee haathhu taal: fetters on the feet, rhythm in the hands. Naamaa gaavai gun gopaal: Namdev sings the praises of Gopal, the One who looks after the whole world. This is one of the story's most loved pictures. The song never depended on the freedom of the body.

A Question to Sit With

When something you love gets taken away, how do you still keep it alive?
