An Impossible Demand

ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਗਊ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਵਾਇ ॥
bismil ga-oo dayh jeevaa-ay.
"Bring this dead cow back to life.
ਨਾਤਰੁ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰਉ ਠਾਂਇ ॥੨॥
naatar gardan maara-o thaaN-ay. ||2||
Otherwise, I shall cut off your head here and now."||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

"Bring this dead cow back to life," says the king.

"If you don't, I will have you put to death, right here and now."

Steadiness grows from trust.
The deeper layer

The king's demand is impossible, and the danger is serious.

Bismil ga-oo dayh jeevaa-ay: bring the slaughtered cow back to life. Naatar gardan maara-o thaa-ay: otherwise I will take your life, right here. The threat is harsh, and the story does not hide it. What it shows next is how Namdev stays steady. His calm comes from trust in the One, with no claim to powers of his own.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you find calm when something feels impossible?
