Verse 24 of 29

Did I Do This?

ਨਾਮਾ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ॥
naamaa kahai sunhu baadisaah.
Naam Dayv said, "Listen, O king:
ਇਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਤੀਆ ਮੁਝੈ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥੨੩॥
ih kichh patee-aa mujhai dikhaa-ay. ||23||
have I done this miracle? ||23||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Namdev says, "Listen, O king:

did I do this wonder?"

The humblest thing is to hand back the credit.
The deeper layer

The credit for the wonder belongs to the One.

Naamaa kahai sunhu baadisaah: Namdev says, listen, O king. Ih kichh patee-aa mujhai dikhaa-ay: is this wonder something I did? He hands back all the glory, just as he did at the start, when he said nothing happens by his own doing. In a story full of hunger for power, the one person who could claim greatness keeps pointing past himself, to the One.

A Question to Sit With

Why is it sometimes tempting to take credit that isn't yours?
