Forgive Me

ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਇ ॥
kaajee mulaaN bintee furmaa-ay.
Through the Qazis and the Mullahs, the king offered his prayer,
ਬਖਸੀ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਗਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
bakhsee hindoo mai tayree gaa-ay. ||22||
"Forgive me, please, O Hindu; I am just a cow before you."||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Through the Qazis and the Mullahs, his own teachers of faith, the king sends his plea:

"Forgive me, O Hindu. Before you, I am as humble as your cow."

Greatness is being big enough to say you're sorry.
The deeper layer

Greatness shows in being able to say sorry.

Kaajee mulaan bintee furmaa-ay: the king sends his request through his Qazis and Mullahs. Bakhsee hindoo mai tayree gaa-ay: forgive me, Hindu, I am your cow. To call yourself someone's cow is to stand before them gentle and low. A ruler bows to a poor singer, and his own learned men carry the apology. Humility crosses every line of faith and rank.

A Question to Sit With

When was a time saying "I'm sorry" took courage?
