Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Namdev's mother begins to weep.
"Why not let go of your Raam," she cries, "and worship Allah, the king's Lord?"
Sometimes fear and love sound exactly the same.
Fear for her child can make a mother say anything that might keep him alive.
Rudan karai naamay kee maa-ay: Namdev's mother weeps. Chhod raam kee na bhajeh khudaa-ay: why not leave Raam and worship Khudaa? Khudaa is a name Muslims use for the One, as they use Allah. She is not arguing about which faith is right. She only wants her son to live. The story treats both names with respect and sets neither above the other.
A Question to Sit With
Has someone ever worried about you in a way that showed how much they love you?
