A Wounded Pride

In plain words

The king says, "The Qazis and the Mullahs, the learned men of my faith, all bow to me.

But this Hindu has trampled on my honor."

You can have everyone's respect and still be ruled by one bruise to your pride.
The deeper layer

Pride can have everyone's respect and still be stung by one person who will not bend.

Kaajee mulaan karahi salaam: the Qazis and Mullahs, the judges and teachers of Islam, greet the king with bowed heads. In hindoo mayraa mali-aa maan: this Hindu has crushed my maan, my pride and honor. The quarrel is about the king's pride, never about whose faith is right. The story honors the king's world, his scholars and his court, even as it shows how pride cannot rest until it wins.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think it bothers us so much when one person won't do what we want?
