How Tangles Begin

ਮੂਲੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
mool moh kar kartai jagat upaa-i-aa.
The Creator created the world, upon the foundation of worldly love and attachment.
ਮਮਤਾ ਲਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੋੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
mamtaa laa-ay bharam bholaa-i-aa. ||2||
Attaching it to possessiveness, He has led it into confusion with doubt. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Creator made the world with attachment at its root.

Fastening it to the feeling of "mine," the One has let it wander, lost in doubt.

Clinging tightly to things is how the mind gets tangled — noticing the pull loosens it.
The deeper layer

The world is built on holding on, and the feeling of "mine" leads minds into confusion.

Mool moh kar kartai jagat upaa-i-aa: the Creator made the world with moh, attachment, at its root. Mamtaa laa-ay bharam bholaa-i-aa: tied by mamtaa, the feeling of "mine," it wanders in doubt. Think of a child who grips one toy so hard they can't play with anything else. Seeing the pull is where loosening it begins.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you hold onto so tightly it sometimes stresses you out?
