Verse 3 of 10

The Wandering Stops

ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta naam darirh-aavai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is implanted within.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਨ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o na dah dis Dhaavai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one does not wander in the ten directions.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਪੰਚ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
ja-o gurday-o panch tay door.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, the five demons are kept far away.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਨ ਮਰਿਬੋ ਝੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
ja-o gurday-o na maribo jhoor. ||2||
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one does not die regretting. ||2||

In plain words

By the Divine Guru's grace, the Naam is planted firmly inside you. By the Divine Guru's grace, you stop running off in ten directions.

By the Divine Guru's grace, the five troublemakers inside you stay far away. By the Divine Guru's grace, you do not come to the end of your life full of regret.

A settled heart stops racing in every direction, and reaches the end without regret.
The deeper layer

With the Guru's light, the mind stops running in circles.

Ja-o gurday-o ta naam darirhaavai — when the Divine Guru comes, the Naam takes root inside, like a seed pressed into soil. Na dah dis dhaavai — the mind stops racing in dah dis, the ten directions. Think of a puppy that stops chasing every squirrel and finally sits beside you.

Panch tay door — the panch, the five inner troublemakers, are kept far away. They are wanting too much, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. Na maribo jhoor — you won't reach the end of life full of regret.

The grace here is very practical. It means a steadier mind, a calmer heart, and a life you can look back on with peace.

A Question to Sit With

What pulls your attention in ten directions — and what helps you settle?
