Words Like Nectar

ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta amrit baanee.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one is blessed with the Ambrosial Bani of the Word.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਨੀ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta akath kahaanee.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one speaks the Unspoken Speech.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇਹ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta amrit dayh.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one's body becomes like ambrosial nectar.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲੇਹਿ ॥੩॥
ja-o gurday-o naam jap layhi. ||3||
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one utters and chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

By the Divine Guru's grace, you are given the Bani, the Word sweet as nectar. By the Divine Guru's grace, you speak of the One no words can hold.

By the Divine Guru's grace, your body becomes sweet as nectar. By the Divine Guru's grace, you chant the Naam.

When your heart is lit, even speaking of the One turns sweet.
The deeper layer

The Guru's light makes your words, and even your body, sweet as nectar.

Ja-o gurday-o ta amrit baanee — when the Divine Guru comes, the baanee, the holy word, becomes amrit, nectar. Ta akath kahaanee — you can speak the akath kahaanee, the story no words can fully hold.

Ta amrit dayh — even the dayh, the body, feels touched by nectar. Naam jap layhi — you chant the Naam and keep it in mind. Jap here is warm and joyful, like humming a favorite song all day because you love it.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a song or a word that makes you feel more alive when you say it?
