Verse 9 of 10

Fear Loosens Its Grip

ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਸੰਸਾ ਟੂਟੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta sansaa tootai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, skepticism is shattered.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta jam tay chhootai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one escapes from the Messenger of Death.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਭਉਜਲ ਤਰੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta bha-ojal tarai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਮਰੈ ॥੮॥
ja-o gurday-o ta janam na marai. ||8||
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one is not subject to the cycle of reincarnation. ||8||

In plain words

By the Divine Guru's grace, doubt breaks apart. By the Divine Guru's grace, you slip free of death's grip.

By the Divine Guru's grace, you cross the frightening ocean of the world. By the Divine Guru's grace, you are no longer born again and again, only to die.

When doubt quiets, even the fear of endings loosens its hold.
The deeper layer

The Guru's light loosens the grip of doubt and the fear of death.

Ja-o gurday-o ta sansaa tootai — when the Divine Guru comes, sansaa, worried doubt, breaks apart. Ta jam tay chhootai — you are freed from jam. In old stories, jam is the messenger of death. Here it stands for the fear of death.

Ta bha-ojal tarai — you cross the bha-ojal, the wide, stormy ocean of life. Ta janam na marai — you step out of the round of being born and dying again and again. It is like getting off a spinning ride at last.

All of it is hope: freedom from fear, with no threat of punishment in it.

A Question to Sit With

What is a worry that gets smaller when your heart feels settled?
