Verse 3 of 5

The Quiet Sage Within

ਸੋ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
so mun man kee dubiDhaa khaa-ay.
He alone is a silent sage, who destroys the duality of his mind.
ਬਿਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਕ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
bin du-aaray tarai lok samaa-ay.
Keeping the doors of his body closed, he merges in the Lord of the three worlds.
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਰੈ ॥
man kaa subhaa-o sabh ko-ee karai.
Everyone acts according to the inclinations of the mind.
ਕਰਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਅਨਭੈ ਰਹੈ ॥੨॥
kartaa ho-ay so anbhai rahai. ||2||
Attuned to the Creator Lord, one remains free of fear. ||2||

In plain words

The silent sage is the one who eats up the split in his own mind. With the doors of his body shut, he melts into the Lord of the three worlds.

Everyone acts the way their mind leans. The one who is tuned to the Creator stays free of fear.

Wisdom is quiet, and it makes you unafraid.
The deeper layer

A quiet, undivided mind rests in the One and grows unafraid.

So mun man kee dubiDhaa khaa-ay — the mun (sage) "consumes" the mind's dubiDhaa (division). Bin du-aaray trai lok samaa-ay — with the "doors" of the senses quieted, one merges into the whole of existence. Kartaa ho-ay so anbhai rahai — attuned to the Creator, one becomes anbhai, fearless. The path here is inward stillness, and its fruit is fearlessness — the settled poise (sahaj) of someone whose root can't be shaken.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your own mind get quiet when it is pulling two ways at once?
