When the Fruit Comes

ਫਲ ਕਾਰਨ ਫੂਲੀ ਬਨਰਾਇ ॥
fal kaaran foolee banraa-ay.
Plants blossom forth to produce fruit.
ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਬ ਫੂਲੁ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥
fal laagaa tab fool bilaa-ay.
When the fruit is produced, the flowers wither away.
ਗਿਆਨੈ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਮ ਅਭਿਆਸੁ ॥
gi-aanai kaaran karam abhi-aas.
For the sake of spiritual wisdom, people act and practice rituals.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਤਹ ਕਰਮਹ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
gi-aan bha-i-aa tah karmah naas. ||3||
When spiritual wisdom wells up, then actions are left behind. ||3||

In plain words

Plants blossom so that they can make fruit. When the fruit comes, the flowers wither away.

People do good works and practices to reach wisdom. When wisdom wells up inside, the works are left behind.

Practices are the blossom; understanding is the fruit they were always for.
The deeper layer

Practices are the blossom, and wisdom is the fruit they were growing toward.

Fal kaaran foolee banraa-ay / fal laagaa tab fool bilaa-ay: the flower exists for the fruit and falls when the fruit arrives. So too gi-aanai kaaran karam abhi-aas: rituals and practices are done for the sake of gi-aan, wisdom. When wisdom dawns, karmah naas: the outer works fall away, their purpose fulfilled. The flower was never wasted; it was the fruit's own beginning. Ritual is seen gently here, as a stage on the way.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of something you had to practice hard at, until one day it just became part of you?
