Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 131
Verse 5 of 5

Why Not, Right Now?

ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਦਧਿ ਮਥੈ ਸਇਆਨ ॥
gharit kaaran daDh mathai sa-i-aan.
For the sake of ghee, wise people churn milk.
ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਕਤ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਬਾਨ ॥
jeevat mukat sadaa nirbaan.
Those who are Jivan-mukta, liberated while yet alive - are forever in the state of Nirvaanaa.
ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਪਰਮ ਬੈਰਾਗ ॥
kahi ravidaas param bairaag.
Says Ravi Daas, O you unfortunate people,
ਰਿਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਜਪਸਿ ਅਭਾਗ ॥੪॥੧॥
ridai raam kee na japas abhaag. ||4||1||
why not meditate on the Lord with love in your heart? ||4||1||

In plain words

Wise people churn milk to bring out the ghee, the golden butter. Those who are free while still alive live in peace forever.

Ravi Daas says: O unlucky ones, why don't you remember the One with love in your heart?

The peace you're looking for is reachable — so why not start holding it close now?
The deeper layer

The treasure is already inside, and loving effort draws it out, the way churning brings butter out of milk.

Ghrit kaaran daDh mathai sa-i-aan: the wise churn milk (daDh) for its hidden ghee (ghrit). Jeevat mukat sadaa nirbaan: some are jeevan-mukt, free while still alive, always at peace. Ravi Daas closes with a heartfelt call: ridai raam kee na japas abhaag, "O unlucky one, why not remember Raam in your heart?" Abhaag means unlucky, someone missing out on a treasure close at hand. The cry is sad and caring at once, an open invitation to begin.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good thing you could start today, instead of waiting for "someday"?
