Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The body is the mosque, and the mind is the priest who leads the prayer, calm and easy.
Formless One, You are married to Maya, the whole changing world, and so You have taken form.
Your own body can be the truest place of prayer.
Dayhee mehjid man ma-ulaanaa: the body is the masjid, the mosque. The mind is the maulana, the one who leads the prayer. The prayer is sahj nivaaj, a calm and natural namaz, the Muslim prayer. Namdev places this prayer inside every person. Worship needs no special building, only a settled heart.
In the next line, the Nirankaar, the Formless One, has taken aakaar, form. The verse pictures this as a marriage to the living world. The formless and the formed are one. Think of water, which has no shape of its own. Pour it into a cup, and it takes the cup's shape. It is still the same water.
Where do you feel most able to be quiet and connected — does it need to be a special place?
