Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 15
Verse 4 of 5

Wandering, Longing for Home

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
bin naavai manmukh jam pur jaahi.
Without the Name, the self-willed manmukhs go to the City of Death.
ਅਉਖੇ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
a-ukhay hoveh chotaa khaahi. ||3||
They suffer in pain and endure beatings. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Naam, those who follow only their own minds go to the city of death.

There they have a hard and painful time, and they take blow after blow.

Turning away leaves us lost, but the way home is always open.
The deeper layer

A life without the Naam leads to pain, like a road that ends in the city of death.

Bin naavai manmukh jam pur jaahi: without the Naam, the manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind, goes to jam pur, the city of death. A-ukhay hoveh chotaa khaahi: they suffer and take hard knocks. The picture is stern: turning away from the Naam hurts.
