In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Through the Guru's Word, so many silent sages have been carried across. Indra and Brahma, great names from the old stories, have been carried across too.

Sanak and Sanandan, and so many humble people who lived simple, hard lives, reached the other side by the Guru's grace.

The same Word that carried the wisest of every age is available to you too.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word has carried many, many people across, even the great names from the old stories.

The verse names them one by one. There are the mun, the quiet sages who sat in silence. There is Indra, king of the heavens in the old Indian stories, and Brahma, who those stories say made the world. There are Sanak and Sanandan, two famous wise brothers. And there are many tapsee, people who lived very simple, hard lives to grow closer to the One.

Guru Nanak honors all of them as fellow travelers. Each one crossed the same way. Gur parsaadee paar paray — by the Guru's grace, they were carried across to the other side.

Think of a school bus that stops for every child on the road. It doesn't matter which house you live in. The same bus takes everyone to school. The Word works like that. It carries people of every name and every place.

A Question to Sit With

Who are some wise people from different traditions you admire?
