Everyone Says It, Few Live It

ਭਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

Everyone calls him, "Devotee, devotee."

But without serving the True Guru, devotional worship is not obtained. Only through perfect destiny does one meet God. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone goes around saying, "Devotee, devotee."

But without serving the True Guru, devotion does not come. Only by perfect good fortune does a person meet the One.

Anyone can say “devoted”; it is the living of it that counts.
The deeper layer

Anyone can say the word devotee; devotion itself comes through serving the Guru, and meeting the One is a gift of great good fortune.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Bhagat bhagat kahai sabh ko-ee: everyone says "devotee, devotee." The word is easy to say. Bin satgur sayvay bhagat na paa-ee-ai: without serving the True Guru, devotion is not found. Poorai bhaag: by perfect good fortune, the One is met.

A Question to Sit With

What is something people say easily but is much harder to do?
