Spending the Treasure Without Noticing

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਲਾਭੁ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਕਿਦੂ ਹੋਈ ॥
manmukh mool gavaaveh laabh maageh laahaa laabh kidoo ho-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs lose their capital, and still, they demand profits. How can they earn any profit?
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੨॥
jamkaal sadaa hai sir oopar doojai bhaa-ay pat kho-ee. ||2||
The Messenger of Death is always hovering above their heads. In the love of duality, they lose their honor. ||2||

In plain words

Those who follow only their own mind lose the money they started with, and still they ask for profit. How can there be any profit?

Death hangs over their heads all the time. Caught up in loving something other than the One, they lose their honor.

Chasing only the glitter, we can spend our treasure without noticing.
The deeper layer

Lose what you started with, and there is no profit left to ask for; a heart pulled toward everything but the One loses its honor.

Manmukh mool gavaaveh laabh maageh: the one turned toward their own mind spends the mool, the starting money, and still asks for profit. Picture a shopkeeper who gives away the whole stock and then waits for earnings. Jamkaal sadaa hai sir oopar: death is always overhead, a reminder that time here is short. Doojai bhaa-ay pat khoee: in doojaa bhaa-o, the love of something other than the One, honor is lost.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable that is easy to overlook?
