Robes Alone Do Not Heal the Ego

Trying on all sorts of religious robes, they wander around day and night, but the disease of their egotism is not cured.
parh parh loojheh baad vakaaneh mil maa-i-aa surat gavaa-ee. ||3||
Reading and studying, they argue and debate; attached to Maya, they lose their awareness. ||3||

In plain words

They put on all kinds of holy robes and wander around day and night, but the sickness of ego does not go away.

They read and read, then quarrel and argue. Stuck to Maya, the glitter of the world, they lose their awareness.

Outfits and arguments cannot heal the ego; only the heart’s turning can.
The deeper layer

The sickness of ego stays, whatever robes you wear and however much you argue.

Bahlay bhaykh: many kinds of religious robes. Ha-umai rog: ego (haumai, the feeling of being a separate self) is called a sickness, and changing clothes does not cure it. Parh parh loojheh baad vakaaneh: reading and reading, then fighting and debating. Mil maa-i-aa surat gavaa-ee: stuck to Maya, the shine of the world, a person loses awareness. This is aimed at empty show in any tradition, never at a faith.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looks impressive on the outside but can be empty inside?
