Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 3
Verse 4 of 5

When We Don't Listen

ਬਹਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਹੋਛੀ ਸਬਦ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥
bahray karan akal bha-ee hochhee sabad sahj nahee boojhi-aa.
Your ears are deaf, and your intellect is worthless, and still, you do not intuitively understand the Word of the Shabad.
janam padaarath manmukh haari-aa bin gur anDh na soojhi-aa. ||3||
The self-willed manmukh wastes this priceless human life and loses it. Without the Guru, the blind person cannot see. ||3||

In plain words

Your ears cannot hear and your thinking has grown shallow, and still you do not quietly understand the Word.

The one who follows only their own mind loses this priceless human life. Without the Guru, the blind cannot see.

We miss the deeper song when we stop listening — a guide helps us hear.
The deeper layer

When your ears and mind close up, you miss the Word, and the Guru helps you see.

Bahray karan: deaf ears. Akal bha-ee hochhee: thinking grown shallow. The manmukh is someone turned toward their own mind, who loses janam padaarath, the priceless gift of a human life. These are ordinary ways anyone can miss things.

Bin gur andh na soojhi-aa: without the Guru, the blind cannot see. Think of a dark room. You bump into everything until someone switches on a light.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone helped you notice something you'd been missing?
