In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

In kindness, the One brings people to sit at the feet of the saints, the ones who belong to the One.

Through the Guru's Word, sing and remember the One, and let your attention sink into the One and rest there.

In kindness the One seats you among people who love it, and your attention finds rest.
The deeper layer

The One, in kindness, brings us close to good people.

This shabad by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru, opens with Ik Onkar: there is One Creator of all. "har jan sant kar kirpaa pag laa-in" — in kirpaa, kindness, the One seats us at the feet of the sant, the saints. Sitting at someone's feet is a way of learning from them, like a student close to a favorite teacher.

Through the gur shabad, the Guru's word, we sing the One. Then our surat, our attention, settles and soaks into the singing. Think of a noisy classroom that goes quiet when a favorite song starts. Scattered thoughts come home.

A Question to Sit With

Which people help your busy mind settle down?
