Show Mercy, Mercy to me, O Father of the World, O my Lord and Master; make me the water-carrier of the slave of Your slaves. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Remember the Naam of the One inside your heart.

Have mercy, have mercy on me, Father of the whole world, my Master. Make me the water-carrier for the servants of Your servants.

It's enough to serve as even the smallest helper of the One's helpers.
The deeper layer

Remember the Naam in your heart, and ask for the humblest work of all.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har hirdai jap naam muraaree: remember the Naam of the One in your heart. Then comes a plea to the jagat pit, the Father of the World: ham daasan daas keejai panihaaree, make me the panihaaree, the one who carries water, for the servants of Your servants.

In old villages, carrying water was hard, humble work. Think of the person who fills everyone's water bottles before a game. Nobody cheers for them, and everyone needs them.

A Question to Sit With

What's a small, humble way you could help someone today?
