What Tearing Others Down Costs

jin aisaa satgur saaDh na paa-i-aa tay har dargeh kaadhay maaree.
Those who do not find such a Holy True Guru are beaten, and driven out of the Court of the Lord.
ਤੇ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਸੋਭ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਨਕ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
tay nar nindak sobh na paavahi tin nak kaatay sirjanhaaree. ||3||
These slanderous people have no honor or reputation; their noses are cut by the Creator Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Those who never find such a holy True Guru are struck and driven out of the One's Court.

These people who tear others down win no honor at all. The Creator takes away their good name, and they lose face.

Tearing others down never brings honor.
The deeper layer

Tearing others down wins no honor, and it leaves a person far from the One's Court.

Jin aisaa satgur saaDh na paa-i-aa: those who never find such a holy True Guru. Tay har dargeh kaadhay maaree: they are struck and sent out of the One's Court. Nindak means someone who tears others down. Sobh na paavahi: they win no honor.

Tin nak kaatay sirjanhaaree: the Creator cuts their noses. It is an old saying for losing face, being put to shame in front of everyone.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like putting someone down, what could you do instead?
