The One Who Speaks Through All

har aap bulaavai aapay bolai har aap niranjan nirankaar niraahaaree.
The Lord Himself speaks, and the Lord Himself inspires all to speak; He is Immaculate and Formless, and needs no sustenance.
har jis too mayleh so tuDh milsee jan naanak ki-aa ayhi jant vichaaree. ||4||2||6||
O Lord, he alone meets You, whom You cause to meet. Says servant Nanak, I am a wretched creature. What can I do? ||4||2||6||

In plain words

The One makes everyone speak, and the One speaks too. The One is pure, without form, and needs no food at all.

O One, whoever You bring close comes to meet You. Nanak, Your servant, says: I am only a poor, small creature. What can I do on my own?

The One speaks through all; whoever it brings close, comes close.
The deeper layer

The One speaks through everyone, and whoever the One brings close comes close.

Har aap bulaavai aapay bolai: the One makes us speak and also speaks. Niranjan, nirankaar, niraahaaree: pure, without form, needing nothing. Jan naanak ki-aa ayhi jant vichaaree: Nanak asks what these poor creatures can do. It is a word of honest humility.

Think of a flute. The music comes through it, and the breath belongs to the player.

A Question to Sit With

When have the right words come to you as if from somewhere beyond?
