Where the Praise Is Heard

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 4.
Bhairao, Fourth Mehl:
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਨਣੇ ॥
satsangat saa-ee har tayree jit har keerat har sunnay.
That is Your True Congregation, Lord, where the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are heard.
jin har naam suni-aa man bheenaa tin ham sarayveh nit charnay. ||1||
The minds of those who listen to the Lord's Name are drenched with bliss; I worship their feet continually. ||1||

In plain words

O One, that is Your true Sangat, where Your praises are sung and heard.

The minds of those who hear the Naam are soaked with joy. I bow at their feet, every day.

The truest gathering is anywhere the One's praises are sung and heard.
The deeper layer

The One's true gathering is wherever the One's praises are sung and heard.

Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru, is speaking. Satsangat is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. It can be in any building or any city. It is any place where keertan, the praise of the One, is being sung and heard.

Think of a campfire. It doesn't matter which beach or which backyard. Wherever the fire is lit and people sit around it, that is where the warmth is.

The minds of people who listen are bheenaa, soaked through, like a sponge left in warm water. The Guru bows at their feet every day, a sign of deep respect and a wish to serve them.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel part of something joyful and bigger than yourself?
