The One Beyond Birth and Death

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਨਰ ਕਰਤ ਕਚਰਾਇਣ ॥
bharam bhoolay nar karat kachraa-in.
Deluded and confused by doubt, the mortal practices falsehood.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
janam maran tay rahat naaraa-in. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Lord is beyond birth and death. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Lost in doubt, people go about doing false things.

The Lord, Narayan, is beyond birth and death.

The One is beyond being born and beyond dying — always here.
The deeper layer

The One is beyond birth and death, and doubt leads people into false ways.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Bharam bhoolay: lost in doubt. The doubt here is picturing the boundless One as small enough to be born and to die. Janam maran tay rahat naaraa-in: Narayan, the One, is beyond birth and death, always present.

A Question to Sit With

What does always here mean to you?
