I do not keep fasts, nor do I observe the month of Ramadaan.

I serve only the One, who will protect me in the end. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I do not keep the fasts, and I do not keep the month of Ramadan.
I serve the One who will protect me in the end.
You can turn your whole heart to the One who looks after you to the very end.
Give your service to the One who protects you to the very end.
This shabad of Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, is one of the great declarations of unity in Gurbani. Varat are the fasts kept in Hindu homes; ramdaanaa is Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. Both are named side by side, with respect. The voice speaks of its own choice: the whole heart given to the One who keeps it safe to the end.
