Verse 4 of 6

The Formless One in My Heart

ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਉ ਨ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਗੁਜਾਰਉ ॥
poojaa kara-o na nivaaj gujaara-o.
I do not perform Hindu worship services, nor do I offer the Muslim prayers.
ਏਕ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਲੇ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਉ ॥੩॥
ayk nirankaar lay ridai namaskaara-o. ||3||
I have taken the One Formless Lord into my heart; I humbly worship Him there. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I do not perform the Hindu worship, and I do not offer the Muslim prayers.

I take the one Formless Lord into my heart, and there I humbly bow.

Take the formless One into your heart, and quietly bow there.
The deeper layer

Take the Formless One into your heart, and bow there.

Poojaa is Hindu worship; nivaaj (namaaz) is Muslim prayer. Ayk nirankaar lay ridai namaskaara-o: I take the one Nirankaar, the Formless One, into my heart and bow there. Inward devotion, stated evenhandedly for both traditions.

A Question to Sit With

What's a quiet, private way you show respect for something you love?
