Words With Flavor

jihvaa rang nahee har raatee jab bolai tab feekay.
Your tongue is not imbued with the Love of the Lord; whatever you say is tasteless and insipid.
You indulge in slander of the Saints; becoming a beast, you shall never be noble. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your tongue is not dyed in the love of the One, so whatever you say comes out flat and tasteless.

You get caught up in speaking badly of holy people. You turn rough as an animal, and you never grow good and noble.

Kind, warm words have flavor — tearing others down leaves everyone smaller.
The deeper layer

Words dyed in love have flavor, and speaking badly of good people makes you rough and small.

Jihvaa rang nahee har raatee: the tongue is not dyed in the One's love, so speech is feekay, tasteless, like food with no salt. Sant janaa kee nindaa: speaking badly of holy people. Pasoo bha-ay: you become like an animal, rough and unthinking, and the goodness in you cannot grow.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Can you feel the difference between words said with warmth and words said flat?
