ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

Only a few obtain the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Amrit, united in Union with the True Guru.

jab lag sabad bhayd nahee aa-i-aa tab lag kaal santaa-ay. ||3||
As long as the mortal does not come to understand the mystery of the Shabad, the Word of God, he shall continue to be tormented by death. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Only a few taste the sweet nectar, the Amrit, when the True Guru unites them with the One.

As long as you do not understand the secret of the Word, death keeps troubling you.

The sweetest thing is rare, and it comes through connection, not grabbing.
The deeper layer

The sweet taste of Amrit is rare, and it comes through the True Guru.

Amrit kaa ras virlee paa-i-aa: only a few find the taste of Amrit, the sweet nectar. Satgur mayl milaa-ay: the True Guru brings them together with the One. Sabad bhayd is the secret of the Word. Until it opens inside you, kaal santaa-ay, the fear of death keeps pulling at you.

Think of a locked box you carry everywhere and worry about. Once you find the key and look inside, the worry eases.

A Question to Sit With

What's something sweet in life you can only receive, not force?
