Knowing Only The One

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
naanak bolai amrit banee.
Nanak utters the Ambrosial Bani of the Lord.
ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੬॥
ayk binaa doojaa nahee jaanee. ||4||6||
Except the One Lord, he does not know any other at all. ||4||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: I speak the Word of the One, sweet as nectar.

Apart from the One, I know no other at all.

Sweet words flow from knowing there is only One.
The deeper layer

Words grow sweet as nectar when the one speaking knows only the One.

Amrit banee means nectar words, speech as sweet and life-giving as nectar. Where do they come from? Ayk binaa doojaa nahee jaanee: he knows no one other than the One.

This is Ik Onkar lived out. Ik Onkar means "One Creator, one Oneness," the first words of the Guru Granth Sahib. It means everything comes from, and lives in, the One. Think of the ocean and its waves. The waves look like many things. But every wave is the same water. Words that come from knowing that feel sweet to hear.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to know something all the way through?
