Holy Water In A Word

ਗੰਗਾ ਜਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ॥
gangaa jal gur gobind naam.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe, is the holy water of the Ganges.
jo simrai tis kee gat hovai peevat bahurh na jon bharmaam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whoever meditates on it, is saved; drinking it in, the mortal does not wander in reincarnation again. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam of the Guru, the Lord of the World, is the holy water of the Ganges.

Whoever remembers it is set free. Drinking it in, I no longer wander from birth to birth.

The holy water people travel for is already within reach.
The deeper layer

The Naam is holy water you can drink anywhere, and it ends the wandering from life to life.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Gangaa jal gur gobind naam: the Naam is the holy water of the Ganges. People travel far to bathe in the sacred river, and the Naam is likened to that water, always within reach. Peevat bahurh na jon bhramaam: drinking it, you stop wandering from one birth to the next.

A Question to Sit With

What do people go far to find that might be closer than they think?
