Verse 3 of 5

One Practice Holding All

ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥
poojaa jaap taap isnaan.
It is my worship, meditation, austerity and cleansing bath.
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਕਾਮ ॥੨॥
simrat naam bha-ay nihkaam. ||2||
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, I have become free of desire. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam is my worship, my meditation, my hard practice and my holy bath.

Remembering the Naam, I have become free of wanting.

One thing held in the heart can gather all the rest.
The deeper layer

Every way of reaching for the sacred is gathered into remembering the Naam, and the restless wanting falls away.

Poojaa jaap taap isnaan: worship, meditation, hard practice, and the cleansing bath, all gathered into simrat naam, remembering the Naam. Each practice is honoured and drawn into one centre. The fruit is nihkaam: free of grasping desire.

A Question to Sit With
