ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਇਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
naanak daas ih kee-aa beechaar.
Slave Nanak has deliberated, and has come to this conclusion:
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੮॥
bin har naam mithi-aa sabh chhaar. ||4||8||
Without the Lord's Name, everything is false and worthless, like ashes. ||4||8||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak, the One's servant, says: I have thought it all through, and this is what I found.
Without the One's Naam, everything is false, worth no more than ashes.
Without the One at the center, even shiny things weigh nothing.
Without the Naam, everything else weighs no more than ash.
Naanak daas ih kee-aa beechaar: Nanak, the servant, has thought it through. Bin har naam mithi-aa sabh chhaar: without the Naam, all is mithiaa, false, and chhaar, ashes. What lasts is Truth; what passes is as light as ash in the wind.
