The One Keeps Its Own Safe

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਆਪਿ ॥
har jan raakhay paarbarahm aap.
The Supreme Lord God Himself has saved His humble servant.
ਪਾਪੀ ਮੂਆ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਤਾਪਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paapee moo-aa gur partaap. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The sinner died through the Power of the Guru. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Highest One has kept the One's own people safe, with the One's own hand.

The one who did wrong came to his end through the power of the Guru.

The One shelters its own, and cruelty tends to undo itself.
The deeper layer

The Highest One guards the people who lean on the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Har jan raakhay paarbarahm aap: the Supreme One Himself keeps His people safe. Paarbarahm means the Highest One, beyond everything. And yet the Highest One comes close to guard a single person.

The verse also says the one who did wrong came undone by the Guru's power. Harm sent at others turns back toward where it came from. Think of a ball thrown hard at a wall. It bounces straight back to the one who threw it. Cruelty works a bit like that. It undoes itself, and no one needs to strike back.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think unkindness so often circles back to the unkind?
