Verse 3 of 5

Harm Undoes Itself

ਅਪਣਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਜਨਿ ਆਪਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
apnaa khasam jan aap Dhi-aa-i-aa.
The humble servant of the Lord and Master meditates on Him.
ਇਆਣਾ ਪਾਪੀ ਓਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
i-aanaa paapee oh aap pachaa-i-aa. ||2||
He Himself has destroyed the ignorant sinner. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The servant of the Master keeps remembering the Master.

And the Master Himself brought the foolish wrongdoer to ruin.

You can stay steady and let cruelty wear itself out.
The deeper layer

Your part is to keep remembering the One and stay steady; the One takes care of the rest.

Apnaa khasam jan aap dhi-aa-i-aa: the servant kept thinking of their Master. Khasam means Master or Husband, the One who looks after you. The servant did not fight back or try to get even. They stayed quiet and steady.

The one who meant harm is called i-aanaa. That word means ignorant, someone who does not understand. Aap pachaa-i-aa: he was brought to ruin. The servant asked for nothing like that; the servant only kept remembering.

A Question to Sit With

How is staying calm sometimes stronger than striking back?
