Verse 4 of 5

Mother, Father, Shelter

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥
parabh maat pitaa apnay daas kaa rakhvaalaa.
God is the Mother, the Father and the Protector of His slave.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਮਾਥਾ ਈਹਾਂ ਊਹਾ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
nindak kaa maathaa eehaaN oohaa kaalaa. ||3||
The face of the slanderer, here and hereafter, is blackened. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is mother, father and guard to the One's own servant.

The face of the one who speaks badly of others is darkened with shame, here and in the world beyond.

The One holds you like a mother and a father at the same time.
The deeper layer

The One cares for you like a mother and a father, and shame settles on the one who tears others down.

Prabh maat pitaa: the One is Mother and Father. The One is pictured as a mother as well as a father. Think of how a parent holds a small child during a thunderstorm. That is how the One guards a daas, a servant who trusts.

Then the verse speaks of the nindak, someone who spreads unkind stories about others. Their face is darkened, here and after. That means shame comes to rest on them. Tearing someone down never lifts you up.

A Question to Sit With

Who guards you the way a good parent does?
