In plain words

Nanak says: the Highest Lord has heard the prayer of the One's servant.

The wrongdoer, stained by his cruelty, lost all hope and died.

Turn to the One, and kindness is kept safe while harm runs out.
The deeper layer

A prayer from the heart is heard by the Highest One.

Jan naanak kee parmaysar sunee ardaas: the Highest One heard the prayer of servant Nanak. Ardaas means a prayer, a humble asking. Sikhs still say an Ardaas together today. When the one being targeted turned to the One, that prayer did not go unanswered.

The verse says the one who meant harm lost all hope and fell. The point is not his fall. The point is that cruelty ran out of ground to stand on. It faded away, and the one who prayed was kept safe.

Think of a fire with no more wood to burn. It simply goes out. Harm is like that. Kindness is what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

When has simply asking for help, a prayer from the heart, made a difference?
