The Beauty Of Your People

ਨਗਜ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
nagaj tayray banday deedaar apaar.
The glorious vision of Your slaves, O Infinite Lord, is wonderful and beauteous.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
naam binaa sabh dunee-aa chhaar. ||1||
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the whole world is just ashes. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Endless One, the sight of Your servants is wonderful and beautiful.

Without the Naam, the whole world is only ash.

You can see a certain beauty in people who live near the One.
The deeper layer

The people who live close to the One are beautiful to see, and without the Naam the world is ash.

Deedaar is a Persian word for sight, or getting to see someone. The Guru says the sight of the One's people is beautiful and without end, apaar. Their beauty is not about fancy clothes or being famous. It comes from being close to the One.

Then comes the other side. Without the Naam, the world is chhaar, ash. Think of a sparkler on a birthday cake. It shines for a few seconds, then only a little gray dust is left. Things with no Naam at their center are like that. Being near the One is the kind of beauty that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What does beauty in a person look like to you?
