Never Far From My Breath

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਖੁਦਿ ਖਸਮ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ॥
naanak ka-o khud khasam miharvaan.
God has been merciful to Nanak.
ਅਲਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦਿਲ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਨ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
alhu na visrai dil jee-a paraan. ||4||10||
May I never forget God; He is my heart, my soul, my breath of life. ||4||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: my Master Himself has been kind to me.

May I always remember Allah, my heart, my soul, and my breath of life.

Keep the One closer than your own breath.
The deeper layer

Keep the One as close as your own heart and breath.

The name Nanak comes at the end, as it does in the Gurus' shabads. Here it is Guru Arjan speaking. The One has been kind to him. So he asks one thing: Alhu na visrai dil jee-a paraan. May I always remember Allah, who is my heart, my soul and my breath. Alhu is Allah, a name for the One in Islam. Dil is the Persian word for heart.

You don't think about breathing, but you never stop. The prayer is that the One would be like that: always there, in every breath. And he ends his praise with words his Muslim neighbors loved. Love for the One can be said in any language.

A Question to Sit With

What do you want to keep so close it never slips away?
