The filth of so many lifetimes is washed away. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serving the True Guru, I receive every fruit, every good thing, like fruit coming into season.

The dirt of lifetime after lifetime is washed away.

Serve the Guru, and what weighed you down washes clean.
The deeper layer

Serving the True Guru brings every good thing and washes away the dirt of many lifetimes.

Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, says satgur sayv sarab fal paa-ay. It means "serving the True Guru, all fruits are received." Satgur is the True Guru. Sayv is serving. Fal is fruit, the good that grows out of a life.

Then janam janam kee mail mitaa-ay: "the dirt of lifetime after lifetime is washed away." Mail means dirt, the things that weigh on us.

Think of coming home after a long, muddy soccer game and taking a warm shower. You feel light and new. That is the picture here: lightness and a fresh start.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that felt heavy until you finally let it go?
